About Me
Welcome! I'm Melissa Oyler, creator of Oyler House Designs. I'm a surface pattern designer, entrepreneur, and online educator based in the Louisville, KY metro area. My interest in design began shortly after a friend introduced me to scrapbooking in the early 2000s. I loved all of the beautiful patterned papers and embellishments. It hit me that someone had to have designed them and I thought, "Why can't I do that?" So I enrolled in a graphic design program at a local college to learn how.
During this time I was still scrapbooking but I was beginning to struggle with finding things to scrapbook about. I didn't have any children yet and there just wasn't much variety in my photos or day-to-day life at that time. This is when I started asking questions about my family. You see, I'm the only child of divorced parents and my dad was & still is a truck driver so I grew up knowing almost nothing about his side of the family. I also have a very large extended family on my mom's side that I don't know much about either. As a result, I became very interested in genealogy. One thing led to another and finally, all of these things combined to blossom into Oyler House Designs.
Fast forward a couple of decades and I'm now the mother of a kindhearted and creative teen with Autism and have been practicing genealogy for 20 yrs. When I'm not designing patterns, you can often find me listening to cozy mysteries, researching my family tree, and creating art with my son.
